J. Forest Ocean Bennett

With an unusual mind and a gift for expressing great emotion through her work, Bennett has a unique style, described best as a combination of ancient shamanic forms and modern day fine art.  “Powerful”  “Spiritual” “Thought-provoking.” are often comments from viewers.  Bodiless figures wrapped in shrouds, figurative works in meditative poses, ‘medicine necklaces’ and paintings of megalithic/paleolithic eras all suggest there is something deep going on.  Although Bennett-a natural born recluse- maintains that everyone is a shaman and everyone has the world’s best work of some kind lying hidden within, her own talent is to achieve a direct connection to the Creator, an unfiltered venue inherently stating her values and truths:  That we are all sacred, unique beings connected across time and space,  all things are one, and that everything has spirit. Her sculptures, cross-cultural and trans-religious, combine native American-like qualities with European, aboriginal, African and other various ancient cultural elements.  Up until 9/11 she was a ship’s captain and submarine pilot- the world’s first woman to captain a sub over 100 feet in length, as well as a rock-climber, airplane pilot and professional scuba diver. She now resides and has a studio in Mokuleia, Hawaii, with her mate Bruce, and their two bird friends Buster and Polly.
